THE ACADEMIC'S VOICE
Communicate with confidence, clarity and enjoyment.
Whether you're teaching, presenting research, speaking at a conference, interviewing for a fellowship or preparing for your viva, communicating well is a central part of academic life.
Brilliant research deserves to be communicated with confidence and enjoyment. Yet for many academics, researchers and experts stress, self-consciousness and physical tension get in the way.
Through practical exercises drawn from actor-training, I help academics, researchers and experts communicate with greater freedom and authenticity - whilst enjoying both the process and the results.

THE CHALLENGE
You know your research. You care about your subject. But when it comes to sharing your ideas, something gets in the way.
Nerves and self-consciousness
You feel anxious before speaking, become overly aware of yourself, or struggle to feel present in the space.
Ideas fail to land
You rush, ramble, run out of time, lose your train of thought or struggle to answer questions.
A voice that doesn't do what you want
You struggle to project, run out of breath, sound lacking in authority, trip over your words, or find that speaking takes more effort than it should.
Struggle to hold the room
Whether you're teaching students, presenting at a conference or speaking with senior colleagues, you want people to connect and engage with you and your ideas.
You don't have to become someone else.
You can learn to communicate more freely, confidently and naturally as yourself..
HOW I WORK
I want you to enjoy communicating and sharing your knowledge

The way you communicate is about so much more than the words you prepare. How you communicate is shaped by your body, breath, voice, mindset and the journey you take your audience on.
My practice draws on my work as a professional theatre director, alongside a decade of experience working with academics, researchers and experts.
This unique combination of expertise has created a practice focussed on:
-
recognising and releasing unnecessary tension
-
finding a natural posture and alignment
-
understanding your breath
-
developing and releasing a natural, resonant and powerful voice
-
creating frameworks that help you organise your thoughts quickly and effectively
-
building sustainable confidence, rooted in authenticity and presence.
The aim isn't to turn you into a polished performer.
It's about finding a way of communicating that feels natural, engaging and enjoyable for you.
"A real investment in my career as a scientist and lecturer, where communicating in a clear and engaging way can be as important as the research itself."
Dr Faith Taylor, King's College London

“A truly energising and insightful session - packed with creativity, relevance, and practical takeaways. Thank you for bringing such a unique perspective to leadership and communication."
Dr Soumya Mishra, India Institute,
King's College London
"I had been struggling to project my voice during long presentations. Marcus was really wonderful and insightful. In just three sessions, I found more confidence in myself and my voice. I also felt I could lecture for several hours without feeling tired or my voice thinning out. I speak in a voice now that is more natural to me and it has made a world of difference!"
